The Beatles

 

The Beatles are perhaps the most famous rock’n’ roll band in history.

 

５０年前の６月末にビートルズが来日し、日本中大騒ぎになった。

 

以前、授業で、生徒さんが好きな音楽について質問をされた時、
ビートルズと答えたら、“うーん、クラッシックに入りそう？”とか、
云われて苦笑していた。

 

リッチモンドスクールで取っている週刊STに、特集が組まれていた。

当時、世界中の若者を熱狂させた

髪の長い４人の若者は、日本の大人の目からは、想像を超えた世界だった。

武道館で行われたコンサートは、時の首相まで反対し大騒動になった。

 

Right-wing activists began to protest the Bealtles’ visit.

There were rumors that some right-wingers were planning to kidnap the Beatles at the airport

when they landed and force them to cut their hair – which at the time was their famous “mop top” look.

– 右翼の人は来日に大反対し、

羽田（当時は）に着いたら彼らのトレードマークのマッシュルームカットを切ってしまおうと、云ったとか。

 

The crowd wasn’t as rowdy as the Beatles were used to.

There were a lot of police in the Budokan and the audience was warned to behave themselves.

In the end however, the concert has gone down in music history.

– 結局、日本の若者は、他の国の若者のように騒ぐことなく、お行儀よく聞いていたようだ。
それでも、そのコンサートは音楽史上で歴史を作った。

 

Beatlesとして活躍したのはたった１０年だが、数々の伝説を残した。
