…death fell from the sky

 

Seventy-one years ago on a bright, cloudless morning,

death fell from the sky and the world was changed.

71年前、晴天の朝、空から死が降ってきて世界が変わりました。

 

…But among those nations like my own that hold nuclear stockpile,

we must have the courage to escape the logic of fear and pursue a world without them.

我が国のように核兵器を持っている国は恐怖の論理から自由になり、

核兵器のない世界を目指す勇気を持たなくてはいけません。

 

We must change our mindset about war itself.

To prevent conflict through diplomacy, and strive to end conflicts after they’ve begun.

To see our growing interdependence as a cause for peaceful cooperation,

and not violent competition.

私たちは戦争自体に対する考え方を変えなければいけません。

外交を通じて紛争を防ぎ、紛争が始まった後に終わらせる努力をして、

相互依存を増やし、暴力的な競争ではなく、平和的に協力する。

広島訪問は、
感動的な事だったと思うけれど、
格調高い演説は、
計算されつくされていて、あまり心に響かなかった。

 

プラハの演説では、
….as the only nuclear power to have used a nuclear weapon,

the United States has a moral responsibility to act.
核兵器を使用した唯一の核大国としてアメリカは行動する道義的責任がある。

 

颯爽と理想を掲げて力強かった演説だったが、
7年の間に、大分トーンが下がってしまった。
オバマ大統領の苦悩が想像できる。

任期後の彼の行動に期待したいが、
小泉さんのように、影響力は激減するだろうが・・。
